Take off your shoes…

Years ago when I was on staff at Salvation Army as a counselor, I taught a class for the men in the Adult Recovery Center in Sacramento.

One of the more popular lessons I taught was called “Take off your shoes”

I would post a sign outside of the chapel that served as our classroom asking all who entered to take off their shoes.

Everyone complied and no one ever had a serious problem with the request.

I would then share with the men how we are always willing and able to comply and participate in general requests, like taking off our shoes.

I would then ask them to think about why they did not feel the need to demand to know what kind of shoes I was asking them to take off.

Would sandals qualify or be excused? What about sneakers and boots?

The point I was making for the class was that we all put something on our feet and even though it may be a boot, sneaker, or sandal, it’s still just a shoe with the main purpose of protecting our feet.

I then used this understanding to hone in on the fact that whether it is alcohol, cocaine, pills, meth, heroin, or other chemicals, we are all addicted to something and we all have that in common and need to band together to recover.

Driving home the point that we all put something inside of us to numb ourselves to the outside world.

Now, folks, I am NOT politically motivated, and those who know me best know that I am color blind with respect to skin and race.

So my point today is that we are all living and breathing humans, so why can’t we band together to help one another instead of all this senseless nonsense…

Lord, let us remember we are all Your children and one Earthly family, AMEN.

Is this available on Amazon or at the Walmart?...

Wouldn’t it be great if we could just order wisdom online, download it to our mind computer and keep on moving?

Heck, even buying the CD and watching it would… no wait, lots of late-night ads are already trying this and I don’t think it’s delivering on the desired effect all too well.

So what is the secret to getting wisdom?

I am still trying to figure that part out, but I can share from my own experience as well as watching and learning from others, that wisdom comes from learning, applying, and gaining experience.

We have a great Book of knowledge that contains many skills, lessons, and insights, but it takes a commitment to read it, share it, and practice the principles it contains.

It’s a good thing to have a Bible, but we can’t gain from it until we learn from it and apply it to our lives.

How’s that working out for you?..

“We have learned that whatever the human frailties of various faiths may be; those faiths have given purpose and direction to millions. People of faith have a logical idea of what life is all about.” Big Book pg. 49

Lord, open our minds and hearts with willingness and a thirst to learn from Your Word, AMEN.

“Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment.” Proverbs 4:7

2 hands are better than 1…

In my experience, I have learned that most things seem to get accomplished more efficiently when another person is involved.

From raising Miss Kai to making decisions on ministry, career, finance, and other things, I have benefited from seeking and using the wise counsel of Miss Tami and many others I am blessed to have in my life.

Along the way I have learned that I am really never alone, so when I am faced with the need to make an instant choice or decision, I can rely on the Holy Spirit residing in me to guide my thoughts and direct my actions.

I am not perfect, and my self-will still gets in the way more than it should, but at least I know that I do have the ability to seek God’s will and not rely on my own.

How’s that working out for you?..

Lord, let us look to You through Your Holy Spirit to show us how to navigate the many choices, decisions, and temptations we face daily, AMEN.
